Direct Quotes

There are two types of direct quotes you can use in your writing:

  1. If the quote is fewer than forty words, that is referred to as a short quotation and it can just be built into your paragraph using quotation marks and the rest of the appropriate in-text citation information.
  2. If the quote is more than forty words, that is referred to as a block quotation.  The reader is able to identify this as a direct quote because the quote is started on a new line and the entire quote is indented so it looks like a block, thus the name block quotation.  Make sure to include the appropriate in-text citation information for the quote

For either type, make sure to include a full citation on your References page.

For more information, please see pages 270 - 278 of the 7th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association or corresponding page of the manual for the citation style you are using.
