Standards allow technology to work seamlessly and establish trust so that markets can operate smoothly. They:
- provide a common language to measure and evaluate performance,
- make interoperability of components made by different companies possible, and
- protect consumers by ensuring safety, durability, and market equity.

Getting a standard is relatively straightforward compared to identifying what standard you need. There are different ways to identify what standard you need to find.
The simplest way to identify standards is to look at standards databases.
Look into academic literature related to your project. They will often list related standards directly or in their references.

Some standards can be identified by looking at codes, which are minimum requirements as set by law.
Examples:
Handbooks reference codes and standards, and give additional context to those codes and standards. Many handbooks will be combined for related standards, and can help you identify additional standards to examine.
