Chicago Manual of Style

The Chicago Manual of Style has two formats for citations:  Notes-Bibliography and Author-Date. This page will focus on the Notes-Bibliography format. The links below will take you directly to sections in the online Chicago Manual of Style:

Notes and Bibliography Sample Citations

These examples show you the basics of the Notes and Bibliography system. The sample notes show full citations followed by shortened citations for the same sources. Sample bibliography entries follow the notes. For more details and many more examples, check out chapter 14 of The Chicago Manual of Style.

Basic Book Formatting:

  • Note:  Author, Title (Place of Publication: Publisher, Date) Page Number.
  • Shortened Note:  Author, Title, Page Number.
