Reference Sources - What are they?

Reference sources:

  • are an excellent place to start research
  • provide background information
  • include basic information sources like dictionaries, encyclopedias, bibliographies, chronologies, and research guides.

Some of the most common types of reference sources are:

Bibliographies
Provide list of sources (books, articles, etc.) for specific subjects. May include annotations.
Guides to Research
Provide list of sources (books, articles, etc.) for specific subjects. May include annotations
Subject Encyclopedias
Provide in-depth, scholarly articles, focused on a specific subject or discipline. Often include bibliographies.

Online Journals on Politics and Religion

  • Church & State (1997-present)
    • A magazine published by Americans United for Separation of Church and State (not peer-reviewed.) It reviews church-state news and analysis and promotes the concept of separation of church and state.
       
  • Journal of Church and State (1959-present)
    • A peer-reviewed journal published by Baylor University's J.M. Dawson Institute for Church-State Studies. It seeks to stimulate interest, dialogue, research, and publication in the broad area of religion and the state. JCS publishes constitutional, historical, philosophical, theological, and sociological studies on religion and the body politic in various countries and cultures of the world, including the United States.
       
  • Journal of Law and Religion (1983-2 years ago)
    • A peer-reviewed journal published by Emory University's Center for the Study of Law and Religion. The journal publishes cutting-edge interdisciplinary, interreligious, and international research on critical issues of law and religion.
       
  • Journal of Law and Society (1983-present)
    • A peer-review journal on law and society, including aspects of religious freedom, tolerance, and church-state relations.
