Lateral Reading

As the Internet grew and more types of social media came into play in addition to new ways to find information, people started paying attention to what professional fact checkers were doing as they evaluated their resources.  The one skill that rose to the top is lateral reading. Lateral reading means moving away (laterally) from the original source by opening up new tabs and looking for additional information about the original source before diving into the original source.  With one quick lateral move, you may find you don't need to spend any additional time with the original source.
