Teaching with AI

As of the Fall 2023 semester, West Texas A&M faculty will begin using one of three standardized statements in their syllabi. These statements provide guidelines for the use of Generative AI (such as ChatGPT, Bard,  LLaMA, and DALL-E) in class. Learn more about generative AI.

Typically this statement should be located just underneath the Academic Integrity Statement on your syllabus, however it may vary. 

No Use of Generative AI Permitted

• Because writing and critical thinking skills are part of the learning outcomes of this course, it is a violation of academic integrity to employ generative AI at any point in this course.

What does this mean?

Your students are not permitted to use AI at all. Consider explaining that "Ethical" uses of AI are not allowed, and consider how you will be enforcing this policy. 

•  Note that many AI detection tools are prone to false positive, so have a plan for students to be able to prove they wrote their papers. 

Use of Generative AI Permitted Under Some Circumstances with Permission

• There are specific situations within this course where you will use generative AI to explore how the technology can serve as a complimentary learning tool. The course faculty member will inform when, where, and how you may employ these tools, along with guidance for attribution. Any use outside the faculty defined parameters constitutes a violation of academic integrity.

What does this mean?

You must provide students with guidelines on when and how to use AI. Include in your guidelines: 

• What uses are allowed, including:
  • What prewriting options are allowed
  • What AI-generated content can be turned in
• How to denote AI-generated content, including:
  • What citations are needed, if any. 
  • If conversations with generative AI should be included as appendices. 
  • If generated content should be italicized, bolded, or used in quotes. 

Broad Use of Generative AI Permitted with Attribution

• The use of generative AI is permitted in this course to help prepare assignments and projects. When submitting work, students must clearly identify any generative AI content in contrast to student contributions (e.g., student citation of prompts, the generative AI platform used, the date the prompts were issued, and related). Using an AI tool without proper attribution qualifies as a violation of academic integrity.

What does this mean?

You must provide students with guidelines on how denote AI-generated content. Include in your guidelines: 

• What citations are needed, if any. 
• If conversations with generative AI should be included as appendices. 
• If generated content should be italicized, bolded, or used in quotes.
