On October 10, the West Texas A&M University Alumni Association held its annual Pheonix Banquet honoring distinguished alumni. Dr. Jim Cornette, the son of the library’s namesake, and two other distinguished alumni were honored at this year’s banque. Cornette graduated from West Texas State College in 1955. From there, he went on to get his degree in mathematics and taught at Iowa State University. After his retirement, Cornette decided he wanted to pursue another dream, and he went back to school and got a degree in Paleontology. Cornette is active in the Texas Poets’ Corner, housed in the Cornette Library, and continues working with WT. Two other alumni were honored with the WT Distinguished Alumni Award for 2024.
